I just heard a little story on youtube. I have NO idea whether it’s true, though it’s claimed to be, and it’s funny.
It seems that an older woman living alone in a (possibly south-Slavic) village was the local "cat lady. She adopted every stray cat that was willing to move in with her, including eventually a strange-looking kitten that showed up hungry one day. She thought it had probably been abandoned because it looked deformed compared to the other cats she’d taken in. But her heart was big and the cat was needy, so here’s today’s breakfast. The strange kitten grew much more quickly than the “normal” kittens, but it didn’t really get any bigger than the adult cats. And it still didn’t look much like a “proper” cat. Very beautiful, but strange.
Eventually two young thugs from the city decided to raid the village, and they made the mistake of choosing the cat lady’s house first. Every cat in the house attacked them, but the most damage was done by the “deformed” cat, who had grown to be a very stocky, heavy boned adult, with fangs 3x longer than the other cats’. He fastened his claws into one invader’s leg and started ripping with his teeth. The invader screamed bleeding murder and fled with his pal just as soon as they could get loose.
The cops picked them up from the blood trail and found that the thugs had had a general issue of claw and bite marks and running blood, and had to be taken to hospital before being taken to jail.
But the most damage by far had been done by the “strange” cat, who had completely torn up the jeans the one thug was wearing, including tearing out the crotch and leaving blood pouring from the thug’s wounds in that very sensitive spot (the story didn’t specify the exact details, but the implication seemed clear: he’d lost something he wouldn’t be getting back.)
The story attracted 2 zoologists from the local university. [continued]
[continuing] They identified the cat and assured its cat-lady “mama” that it wasn’t deformed at all. Its family had looked like that for 6 million years.
It was a Pallas’s wildcat (otocolobus manul) from the Mongolian Steppes that, despite being still a child, and probably an orphan, had somehow made its way west to the village in the eastern Caucasus. Still stranger, on its long journey it had apparently been fed often enough by humans that it had decided that humans who fed it were part of its family.
The story stopped there, but presumably everything continued as before apart from the woman and the village becoming slightly better known for being the only village with a Mongolian wildcat living in it and the only cat lady who had ever casually adopted such an odd-looking creature.
