I would love to sleep in (all the way to 6 AM), but I have a geriatric dog that gets me up at 4:30 almost every morning.
There is a difference between when I get up to go to the bathroom and when she does. I never fully get up and go right back to sleep. She stays out and cavorts (or whatever) for at least five minutes. It’s like, “I want to make sure you are fully awake when I am done.”
It’s not like having a baby; she’s not going to “grow out of it.” It may only get worse. One the plus side: I don’t stay awake at night worrying about how to pay her college tuition.
I hit the rack at 10 pm and watch 15 minutes of Big bang theory and I’m out until 5 am for a short walk, then I put a sleep mask on (Cause the sun is up now) and got back to sleep until 7 – 7:30. Every night. I also use ear plugs cause SWMBO snores.
For those who sleep alone, I’ve found that an iPod Touch or similar music player under the pillow can be a big help. They all have apps with sleep timers. I don’t actually listen to music but things like old Jack Benny and Burns and Allen shows. When you live alone, it can be very soothing to hear the voices of people having a good time. It definitely beats drugs.
That’s another nice thing about retirement. Unless there is a need to get going in the morning, you can go to bed when you’re tired and get up whenever you wake up. If that wasn’t enough sleep, there is always time for naps during the day.

I usually wake up in time to say good night to my daughter. She goes to bed generally between two thirty and three in the morning.

I also sometimes have trouble falling asleep. I’ve been known to toss and turn for three, four… sometimes even five minutes!
