Just a reminder: We need about 2 million immigrants a year to keep our economy going and growing. We would normally get quite a few immigrants with good educations and skills beyond working in agriculture. We would normally get quite a few with ideas about starting new businesses and adding jobs for other workers in our economy. We are, after all, a nation of immigrants… Even if they come with limited skills and don’t speak English, their kids will develop skills and grow into the middle class, if we let them. I do volunteer Medicare counseling and meet people who have permanent resident status, have paid their 40 quarters in Social Security, and sometimes still do not speak good “American” — but their adult children do and often have good jobs in the broader economy. We have always needed a steady supply of those people because they do jobs other workers can’t, or won’t.
Different situations. The Ukrainians are truly homeless, forced out of their own country by war. Humanity insists that we provide aid and comfort. Most other immigrants are just looking for better living conditions, better paying jobs. They might do better by staying home and fighting for better conditions there.
We’re still importing teenagers from Scandinavia to take lifeguard jobs at summer resorts, because American teens don’t want those jobs(Don’t ask me why).

Well, hell. Before that exception was introduced we had no official policy for several decades now.

I’m sure as soon as Russia invades one of those countries their status will change.

Americans welcome immigrants from all countries…provided those countries are in Europe.
