Back when stamps had a specific value, I would buy a book and it would last years. Even after the price of stamps went up, I’d still use a single stamp on the letter. None ever got returned.
How this possible? Cost of stamps never change. It the cost of sending mail that changes. Increased postage charges means you has to sticks more stamps than before.
I don’t have enough forever stamps for a lifetime – but i do have a lot of them. Unfortunately, they are stamps I really like – and hate to use them. I also have a lot of denomination stamps and can mix and match to get the right amount. I use stamps on all my credit card bills and all our ‘local’ bills to be paid. Only my electric bill is on auto-pay – I don’t want that shut off if I’m away for a few weeks.
My 88yo mom actually ran out of stamps the other day & had to go buy another “lifetime supply.” Since she can still run my wheels off & plans to “live to 105 & be a problem to my children,” we’re hoping it won’t be the last time!
I inherited my father-in-law’s extensive “stamp collection”. Rather than investing in a single valuable stamp here and there, he bought sheet after sheet of ordinary lick ’em and stick ’em stamps that are still not worth more than face value, so now I have years of postage at my disposal…lol…
I still mail in my few bills every month. I have control over when the payment is made and an annotated statement for my files.
There does appear to be a new reason for the name of those stamps: it takes forever for mail to get to its destination. I have to send birthday greetings to my mother at least two weeks in advance.
The main problem is leaving an outgoing letter in your mailbox(especially if it is a curbside box) is it is too easily stolen or vandalized. Even the traditional blue boxes are not safe as they too are often vandalized/have mail stolen. Best to go to the post offfice and mail it there.
Postage in 2007 was $.39 which adjusted for inflation is $.54 today = $.04 savings!Math-if she uses 4 stamps a month-50 a year(no xmas cards) that would be 750 stamps at $.39=$300. If she put the $300 on her CC and did not pay off the balance then with the CC interest she is losing money.
I use about 2 stamps a month. I don’t know about down in the USA but here in Canada, I don’t have good luck with the forever stamps. I buy them in books of 10 and if I keep them too long they sometimes don’t stick properly and will curl up in a corner like an old shingle.
Some people may not be aware that a postage rate increase to take effect in July of this year has been filed. It would raise the first-class rate to 60 cents.
Several neighbors and I were discussing this the other day. One man wasn’t aware that “forever” meant that the stamp, regardless of when it was purchased, holds its value! He was convinced that he would have to buy additional stamps of smaller amounts. My neighbor lady finally convinced him that “forever” means… FOREVER! (Which he was pleased to know, since he still writes letters!)

And they’ll need them, because Pluggers don’t like using e-mail.

when was the last time you pluggers readers sent something in the mailbox with a stamp on the envelope?

Forever stamps doing better than cash, stocks, bonds and crypto!

I have to deal with this plugger company that only takes checks. They’re the only reason I have stamps, it’s just them and my mom, lol.

At one time the only government agency that was making money was the postal service. I’m in my mid 60’s now so this was say, 50 years ago?

Yesterday, Purple Heart Forever Stamp, have sheets full of them. Think I’ll mail another letter May 30th just for the hell-of-it.

I have one older relative who is not online, so I send her greeting cards in the mail.

Given how often we mail stuff that needs a stamp.. I figure ~20 odd stamps would last me 15 years easy.

It would take our life savings to have a “lifetime supply” of Forever Stamps at the rate we use them.

Yeah, no, my favorite mode of communication is email now. I love today’s comic, though. Bet a bunch of us have done that, although I haven’t.
