Traditionally girls were always sold. But the fathers had to pay the takers instead of the other way around, called a dowry.

As a former child abuse investigator, I can say that there are parents who have tried to sell their kids, sometimes for as little as a broken-down car and a working TV. However, I can say that many parents of tween and teen aged girls have sometimes wondered if cultures with arranged marriages might not have the right idea.

My wife and I had that discussion forty five years ago.

In the ‘90s there was a popular song called “The Way” that was about a couple abandoning their life and striking out for the unknown. They didn’t bother to sell the kids, just left them in their beds.

They are probably in California.

On a different note, there have been days when selling the kids seemed like a good idea. Retail, not wholesale, of course.
