You have an unexplained phenomenon. You put a name on it. You add a possible explanation, even if implausible, to the name. You then assume corollaries based on your possible explanation. UFO is unidentified flying object. Saw one late one night, but I’m assuming my own lack of information kept me from identifying it and won’t insist it means there is sentient life on the fifth planet of Alpha Centauri. The kids might have experienced something rather than it being pure imagination. They may choose to call it a ghost. But calling it a ghost doesn’t prove, or disprove, anything about life after death.
