I have one chicken, an eight year old hen. She knocks on our front door every day with her bill, a loud “tap, tap, tap, tap.” She then patiently waits until I answer the door and then patiently waits until I fetch her sunflower seeds and place them on the front porch. She also likes raisins, and I sometimes substitute them for the seeds.
We are getting pleasant spring weather, so I frequently have the front door open and the sliding patio door open, as well. There is a unusually small, black cat with a perfectly good home on the other side of the block, who comes around several times a day to mooch from my cats’ food and be “frenemies” with them.
A confident cat “belongs” anywhere. “Cricket”, AKA “Ninja” will walk through the front door as a shortcut to the back yard, no matter how often I chase her outside or leave the gate, right next to door, open for her convenience.
She knows there is a “no house privileges” rule which she used to interpret as “not when I’m looking” but she has become emboldened to the point of interpreting the rule as “not unless I’m actively out of my chair and chasing”.

To paraphrase Charlie Brown, “why can’t [Earl Pickles] have a normal, ordinary [cat] like everyone else?”

“normal cat” is an oxymoron.

You should not say that to the cat (or anywhere where the cat can here it) – it only incentivizes the cat.

Muffin is far from a normal cat!

When it dawns on him to wonder, Earl will be trying to figure out how Muffin managed to ring the doorbell.

Meows get ignored

When they do that, they are really saying me-in, not meow.

I have seen dogs(large) that were trained to ring the door bell, but I would think that might be a reach for a cat

At our local HW/Lumber/Garden store, the birds have figured out how to fly by the sensor to open the sliding entrance doors.

Maddie would hop onto the sill of the bedroom window facing the alley at sunrise, and wake the gf or me to let her in.

My cat wouldn’t meow; she would stretch and scratch at the door. Or just sit there like a moron.

She’s such a charming rascal, though.

Now we wonder how Muffin was able to reach the doorbell button.

One of my 3 dogs opens the front door when he wants in or out. Not sure how to get him to close the door after himself, though.
