I believe there have actually been college “projects” which involved putting a dummy on the side of the road with a hitchhiking sign and following its progress via GPS. Some of the dummies actually got to their intended destination. That may be the origin for this gag but, more likely, just another example of Samson pulling the “mental switcheroo” on us. :)
One of the times I almost died was juggling while hitchhiking. I was hitchhiking in Texas (don’t try it) and juggling some rocks to pass the time. I dropped one of the rocks and stepped out onto the roadway to retrieve it. I had carefully looked to my left but was nearly hit by a car passing on a completely blind curve from the other direction.
The only reason I was hitchhiking is because the phone service had gone out (as it frequently did) at my family’s ranch, so I could not call for a ride. After a couple of hours of no one stopping to pick me up, I wound up sleeping under a tractor. The next day, the phones were back up.

I don’t think that’s the right way to send your luggage on ahead, Horace.

My eye was met, but I suspect there is more going on here than that.

Horace, you don’t need this mitten to get a “thumbs up” – we’ll all give it for you….

When heavy loads you bear
You won’t come far
What you need to move from here to there
Is a nice “baggage car”

The bag is mightier than the thumb, to paraphrase Claudette Colbert.

Okay, now I’m thinking of the old urban legend about The Hook.
