Spammers have a new trick and I can’t figure it out. I can go days with no calls, then when someone I know calls me, after I hang up there’s a notification that a call came in while I was on the phone. It’s always a number I don’t recognize. If I call it back, it goes to an ad. Somehow they know when I’m on the phone. It also doesn’t ring or notify me of an incoming call when I’m already on one.
I got one called “Restricted” and it was my dr office. I found out several days later when I decided to get my messages. Everyone should know by now I don’t pick up messages very often. If I don’t answer a call, either call back or text.
I block any call that I do not recognize by number or name which includes missed ones that do not leave a message. Only problem is that every +/- 10 days I have to clear all the blocked ones because there is a limit of 48 by the telephone service provider.
Then a new list is started which has some repeaters. To date “Spam Risk” is the clear leader in robo calls which are about 20% of them. Those get special treatment. I answer, hold it until the voice starts and then immediately cut it off. Ties up their system, maybe costs a few pennies and if there is a real person involved then they get interrupted.
I answer those calls by saying “You have reached the Governor’s Elder Abuse Hotline. How may I direct your call?” They usually hang up before I’m done.
Texts from those who wish to purchase my house for a “fair and Equitable” get a text back, each text or phone call results in my adding $100k to my “fair and equitable” price (for me). My house is now up to $1.4 million to the next caller! Then I block them. If I don’t recognize the number I just stare at the phone until it stops making noises at me. Did that in the days before answering machines too.

Brings to mind the King of Queens episode when Arthur got a cell phone and no one called him at the coffee shop.
