Darn right about that remark, Baldo. Why did Jake decide to sign up for that position in the first place?

    I work nights stocking groceries

Six hours with the store closed and the two hours it’s open while I’m there aren’t very busy

I worked days for 5 years, do not miss it

I taught at a community college for several years. It would have been a nice gig if it weren’t for the students.

Perhaps it’s his punishment for sleeping on the job. Ah, the days of retail. When someone asks you what kind of 8.5 × 11 paper you need for an HP printer, or tries to return an item they didn’t buy at your store (but insisting they did), or the person who doesn’t know what kind of charging cord they need – but won’t bring their device to the store unless they know you have the right one.

Anyone who’s worked customer service can relate. 20+ years as a phone service person, can confirm the large percentage of entitled, contemptuous callers with unearned superiority complexes who also declined to listen. The number of nice, considerate callers didn’t quite tip the balance. Fortunately employer offered early retirement. We took it because it was a job, and they were one of the few companies with decent vacation offered.

I use humor a lot to ease thru the day. Today a customer asked “Do you know where the sticky mouse traps are?” I looked at him and just said “Yes.” Paused for a few seconds then said “Oh, did you want me to tell you where they are?”
