The Eagle was based on a novel by Pushkin, but considerably retooled so as to introduce the title personage, Valentino’s Zorro-like alter ego. Eleven years later, in The Vigilantes Are Coming, Republic Pictures came up with an even more obviously Zorro-derivative character known as the Eagle, this time fighting in Old California like Zorro, but against Russian Cossacks as if in the Valentino movie!
