Doonesbury’s funniest strip was a Sunday football huddle when BD was quarterback and Zonker was wingnut(?). I used to have it pinned on the wall. I wish I could find it again.

All I can remember is Zonk making jokes in the huddle

Waitaminnit — wasn’t Boopsie a cheerleader when BD and Zonk were playing? Was she completely clueless as to what Zonker did? Well, if Zonker was that confusing, maybe she was…along with everybody else.

I think his most complicated play instruction was, “Go long on two.”

Yeah, “Left Wingnut” is a good description of the role Zonker played on the team. And he brought the Special Brownies. Indispensable man, that Harris.

I seem to remember that Zonk was a very good receiver in the early days.

I know some people who played left wingnut; they’re in politics now.

It was a different time, especially when higher-ups wanted their teams to at least try to win!!

Did they have Gatorade back then? I’m a contemporary of these guys, and I don’t remember there being much more than Kool-Aid.

Sounds pretty much like being on the wrestling team at the U. of Chicago in 1978…
