My normally brilliant favorite dictionary (Amer. Herit. 4th Ed.) has this:
A pattern of drumbeats characterized by four basic beats and alternating left-handed and right-handed strokes on the successive primary beats. [Probably imitative.]
“Probably imitative”? Probably?
(My own def.: paradiddle: a diddle that jumps out of airplanes.)
