Twenty years and that is all you’ve done? Janis you’re a slacker. I completed the earth’s circumference last year, started in Dec. 2013. Totals so far: Steps 61,312,994Floors | 45,559Distance | 28,708.61 mi
One man literally walked around the world. It was a four-year trek, and he faced more than a couple of life-threatening situations. Also, sadly, his father passed while he was walking. For a brief introduction, use this link:
There is a mile long straight part of rt. 249 in Piney Point, Maryland. When I lived near there, I figured one could spend 3 days of their life traversing this straightaway if they lived on one and and traveled over it to work and school in there life.
According to my Fitbit, I have walked around the equator. That is the last one I remember, I could have more by now. I have only had this brand for a few years. I had Jawbone until they discontinued service with zero warning and went out of business for personal products. They decided to switch to hospital equipment. I do walk a lot, but I really like the sleep feedback, too.
For his “Out of Eden” project, journalist Paul Salopek is spending a decade walking 24,000-miles along the pathways of the first humans who migrated out of Africa, across Asia and down the west coast of North and South America.
I had a stationary bike. After a few years, I had done 12,500 miles on that bike — halfway around, at the equator. But I wondered what degree of north latitude would be 12,500 miles long (so I could see what cities were at that latitude). I thought I’d figured it out, but wanted validation. We were having parent-teacher conferences, so I asked the 7th grade math teacher. She took the problem and said she’d get back to me. Never did. When my daughter asked about it, she said she’d lost the problem — but didn’t ask for another copy.
I repeated this with math teachers each year. Never got an answer.
But, I posted the problem on a cycling site, and got 3 answers (all correct) within minutes.
If you’re curious, #Meg O’ Your Heart has the answer above.
I walk 2-3 miles daily, and this summer heat came close to halting me. Felt victorious everytime I finished the walk. And yes, it felt more like 10 miles.
Given I do 5 miles most days, I completed a one way trip so far this year to go from my home (Vancouver, WA) to Nome, AK or Charleston, WV, or Morelia, MX—depending on the direction you choose.

Two miles a day ain’t gonna get you 10,000 steps a day. However it will get you a long way from home if you just walk one way.

I appreciate daily walking, but not running. I was a firm believer that exercise was for those who didn’t work for a living.

It’s good for you, Janis. Builds character.

Then I’ve walked around the whole equator more than once!

I think Arlo needs a hobby.

But if she started in Helsinki and walked around the earth at that latitude, she’d have gone all the way around.

exercising for itself is just a waste, or just bragging rights. If it helps accomplish somethingthen great.
btw the 10,000 step a day goal was from a advertising campaign to promote a pedometer.

Janis has almost made it the equivalent of around the equator of Mars. Would that make her feel better?
klapre about 2 years ago
Yeah, that’s pretty discouraging. I would have expected to walk to the moon and back.

Just figuring, the dog and I have walked up and down the street every morning more than 6000 times.
FassEddie about 2 years ago
Mountain peaks extend that distance, Arlo.

I figured it at three miles per day every day for eight hours per day, so a thousand days would be good for 24,000 miles.

You think that’s depressing? You can walk 100 miles and not even lose a pound of fat:
100 miles / 3 mph * 100 calories/hour = 3300 calories vs 3500 per pound of fat…

I walk at least 3 miles a day, 5 miles most day
