In MN/WI we see roadside dead deer all the time, but last month I saw two dead black bears. They are moving south! Even in our neighborhood, so we’ve been told to remove our tasty birdfeeders.

That would actually be a cool painting, Ruthie. Why don’t YOU paint it?

I was driving the school bus out of the neighborhood, headed to school, and there was a dead rabbit. One girl said “Don’t hit it!” and I said “He’s not getting any deader! And how do you know I wasn’t the one who hit him on my way in?”

Empathy is a very good quality to have. I had it at that young age, too. The first book I took out of the school library had a bear cub captured and riding in the bed of a truck. It fell out and died. I cried a LOT. I think I was maybe 6 or 7.

If a kid saw a dead bunny and asked what it was, I might lie. If the kid already knew, I wouldn’t.

When my niece and nephew were little, they captured a baby rabbit and put it in a box. The next morning their mom saw it had died and tried to break it to my niece very gently. She fully expected tears and a broken heart when she was finished explaining but the little girl excitedly yelled out to her brother, “Hey, Shawn, wanta see a dead rabbit?” You just never know about kids.
