I don’t live in America, so it’s unlikely to happen, but if anyone ever boasted about their genealogy to me by saying “My ancestors came over on the Mayflower”, I have the perfect reply. “What? In 1620? That’s nothing. My ancestors came over (to Iceland) in 874.”
No they weren’t. The Pilgrims came here and there was no one to greet them. So they went ashore and found them. The inhabitants welcomed them and they all shared a big meal.
They were far from the first. Obviously there was a first.. but many groups came subsequently, Vikings and Eskimo’s to name just two. There was no magic date.. 1492 that gave everyone living in the Americas then.. Indigenous statice.
However you view the Mayflower pilgrims, I just don’t see much point in saying you were descended from them. You’re not your ancestors. You have neither their honor nor their guilt.
Yes, exactly. And they tended to stink because they didn’t believe in bathing, were a burden on the existing system because they had no clue how to sustain themselves, were kicked out of Holland for being trying to oppress anyone who believed other than they did, were disease ridden, and on and on and on. Disgusting people. Reminds me a bit of the trumpists descriptions of the migrant caravans supposedly coming to the US from South America a few years ago, except more accurate for the Puritans. And their legacy lives on.

Were those ancestors her grandparents on her mother’s side or her father’s side?

They were hardly illegal when there was no country, with laws to break, making their presence illegal.

Careful, Rose. Avis is giving you the same look her son gave Bob the Goon after Batman took away his balloons in the Batwing.

Since there wasn’t a law against it they could hardly be “illegal” immigrants then.

The Mayflower wasn’t even the first ship of English settlers to North America. That was Jamestown, Virginia in 1607.

“My ancestors met them.”
