Sad but true story: I worked in a restaurant for a while, and several years ago, one night while I was managing the shift, a woman came in and asked for a table for 2. My hostess sat her and left 2 menus. A waitress went to her table, saw there were 2 menus, asked if she would like something to drink, and would she want to wait for her 2nd person. The woman said no, that she would go ahead and order drinks for the both of them. The table was near the doorway to the kitchen, so as the waitress was getting the drinks, she could see the woman talking as if there were a 2nd person there. The waitress went ahead and brought the 2 drinks out, and the lady went ahead and ordered 2 meals. The lady kept talking to her unseen guest at the table. When the food came out, the lady said thank you, proceeded to eat and talk to her guest that wasn’t there. The waitress came back into the kitchen, and told a few crew about what was going on. And then someone started laughing. Next thing I knew the lady wanted to talk to the manager, me, about how rude our crew was. She told me that her friend didn’t feel like eating now, and could we please pack it up to go. She was hurt that the crew was laughing, but she really believed her friend was there. We never saw her again.

My sister in law was a teacher for the young ones. She knew everything that happened in their families.
