I toured the Cotswold’s once. Those roofs were pretty impressive, but no one ever talks about the fish netting over them. I get the need, but it never gets much press.

I understand that replacing a thatched roof is very expensive (when one can no longer lay down new thatch on top of the old).

I was in Holland many years ago, even at that time only the rich could afford a thatched roof. What’s not talked about is if you have a thatched roof, you have lots of company living in said thatch.

But slate/asphalt/terracotta doesn’t grow in fields

Proper genetic engineering should yield a plant which would grow into a house, forming the entire house and continue to strengthen itself through the centuries.

An early step would involve a plant which would cover an existing roof, make it waterproof and continue to grow stronger until it could sneer at hurricanes and tornadoes.
