Reminds me of someone I know who bought a homestead way out in the boonies. He lived there happily until he suddenly had “neighbors” building their home a mere mile away.
the place that we rented for a mercifully brief few months before moving to our current location, where we have lovely neighbors, had wilma’s kind of neighbors. the old guy in back was into cabinetry, blithely running his bandsaw all day from 6 in the morning. on one side was a young father who apparently desperately wanted his kid to be a pro baseball star and the thwock of the baseball hitting the side of their house went on late into the night as the kid practiced being the team’s ace pitcher. on the other side, a little girl who spent all her waking hours screeching like a banshee (literally) or shouting “bye bye” over and over to all the various adult residents of the house. across the street, an old woman who was hard of hearing and engaged in long conversations that could be heard for blocks around with her daughter who invariably arrived for a visit while i was trying to take a nap…
