It seems as if this is showing just how Max’s moms are having difficulty with knowing how to explain these sorts of things to Max.
I won’t say it’s necessarily because there is not a male parent present.
Because heterosexual parents also often don’t know how to explain it to their child in a way that is unique to them.
Each child understands it in their own time and has to learn it in their own way.
Neither one of Max’s moms appears to be taking on the role of a male fatherly figure like some same sex couples do and it does make you really wonder how will he see the world as he grows up.
Max’s blonde haired mom is obviously his biological mother.
My guess is that probably she got into a bad and possibly abusive relationship with Max’s father and she left him and it’s possible that the abuse left her so messed up that she felt safer afterwards with another woman instead of another man and she feels like she can relate to other women better than men.
Although it’s possible that she discovered her true identity during the relationship with Max’s father and just left him.
The ex spousal abuse theory could also explain why Max is so quiet and stays to himself a lot.
The fact that Max still has his real mother paints many uncomfortable theories.
but could Max also be secretly uncomfortable with the living situation of having two mothers?.
He’s not the type to tell others what’s on his mind at all.
they seem to make him very uncomfortable when they get excited and dump their ideas on him all at once.
there’s too many possibilities and I think he went to Voltina because she’s calmer despite being an electric element type dragon.
And she’s a female character who might know better how to help with this issue with Phoebe.
I’ve always wondered if Max can touch Voltina and not get shocked.
Oh my. So much popular psychology and social ideology over one frame of one comic strip. At least some people in the audience are really working hard to create some sense of the frame that is acceptable to them. Have these conversations with people you know. There is a lot more potential for growth and understanding in those conversations I believe.
Has anybody else noticed that the sparrows (aka “dark-eyed juncos”) around here do the same thing as voltina does around power-lines/transformers…??
it’s pretty weird/funny… they freeeeak out, and you will see large groups of them (sometimes a hundred) taking turns sitting right next to the transformer and squawking to beat-all.

I thought Voltina was light blue. Is her being green here a coloring mistake or intentional?

More mythical and magical beings in this town than in most.

Not much furniture in that house. They need at least two more chairs, maybe a table, and who knows, a sofa.

I was just talking about how we hadn’t seen Voltina in a while replying to comments on yesterday’s strip and here she is. Been a long long time.

Never seen Voltina before. Leave it to Max to have such a special friend and be so quiet about it.
