If it really were a double “u”, it would be easier to spell “vacwm”.

Well, the French got it right…

It would be a “double u” when you use lower case and write it by hand though.

The Romans are to blame. The letter V was also used as U. They wrote SENATVS – pronounced senatus but also VIA and VINO pronounced wia and wino. Double V in Saxon meant doubled U.

And some might pronounce it an F sound.

Letters should be pronounced with one syllable only (my own, grumpy opinion). When the internet became available to the masses, I was constantly annoyed by the use of www. It takes far fewer syllables to say world wide web. I’m so glad that www piece is now obsolete.

Careful, I live on Waukesha County road V V, and wondered for a couple decades why all my neighbors did not agree it was W.

OK here we go. Most letters have one syllable. W has three. How many have two?
