When I was abput ten years old, my parents started allowing me to stay up to see the New Year in. I used to enjoy the tradition of opening the back door to let the old year out and then the front door to let the new year in. We would do this as the clock was chiming the twelve strokes of midnight. Such traditions are dying out now that people watch New Year celebrations on TV.
Yesterday, I stated that Red’s sock had an appropriate red spot on it and that the red and white imagery reminded me of a bloodstained bandage. One of the two replies I got said “No one bleeds in Red and Rover thankfully”. This is certainly true. There are many comic strips in which characters can be heavily bandaged and often for comedy effect but we rarely see blood in humorous comic strips. We see the bandages but no blood.
Red and Rover is certainly a wonderful strip which concentrates on the more positive aspects of childhood. Any violence is largely limited to the TV shows such as Star Trek which Red and Rover enjoy watching.
I don’t stay up late enough to watch any of that stuff and haven’t for many years. If I want to see/hear NYE celebrations – I go on line to western Europe at 6 pm EST. More suited to my bedtime. lol
on the year 1999/2000 I watched one reporter trying to cover each country as it rang in the new year. I watched him get more and more exhausted. It was a tough gig for him.

We hear the Pummerin ring, greatest bell in St. Stephans cathedral, and than hear the music of Johann Strauß of “Blue Danube” and dance a little bit.

If nobody watched the ball and nobody recorded it happening, would the ball actually have dropped?

I haven’t made it to midnight in the last 10 years. In some of the places we’ve lived, I have been woken up by the fireworks at midnight, though.

Yeah…great idea, Rover. A ‘squeaky’ New Years Eve ball.
