“Over the river, and through the wood, / To grandfather’s house we go; / The horse knows the way, to carry the sleigh, / Through the white and drifted snow. / Over the river, and through the wood, / To grandfather’s house away! / We would not stop for doll or top, / For ’t is Thanksgiving day!” From pages 25-28 of L. Maria Child’s little-remembered 1845 book, "Flowers for Children: II: For Children From Four to Six Years Old. It was published in Boston by J. H. Francis.
There are ten more verses. I once taught it to a children’s chorus; they sang it from memory. Delightful poem. Yes, there is a space between the ’t and the is. It was 1845, and we were still figuring out what kind of a smart culture we should be!
Leaving this morning for daughter’s house. It snowed last night and I’m hoping the roads are okay ~ especialy the gravel road up to her house. Enjoy Christmas with Mom & Dad!
Uhm, Amanda, I thought you liked the cold weather. You seem intolerant of temperatures over 60. So you have a limit? Well, you could come to Tucson, where it is a lovely sunny day and going to be about 68 degrees. See you soon! (Hee Hee).
My thoughts exactly Amanda. I wish you a wonderful Christmas time! I know the cats will be waiting for some leftover “goodies” that you’ll inevitably bring home :-)
And may all of you loyal readers of our favorite strip enjoy a wonderful holiday. For a lot of us it’s not turning out like we expected with the winter storms, but make the best of it and re-read Amanda’s strips. Oh, and watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

I brought one of the ferals in this evening before dinner (I am trying to get him accustomed to inside). It was 7 this morning and 19 when I brought him in. He won’t go back out. Smart cat. He was someone’s pet, as the first time I saw him he had a green bead collar, so I called him Emerald. He disappeared a few days, and came back without the collar, but the name stuck. Only one cat is annoyed with his presence (the youngest and last in). All others sniffed his nose and left him alone. My Christmas Kitty. My neighbor decided to adopt the dog she is fostering so the dog is heh Hanukkah present.
I suspect you will have a sizable hamper of food to take home, or survive on if need be. Along with all those ‘practical’ gifts of socks, sweaters, hankies and insulated slippers. I’m wishing from the heart that you have a safe, fun, and a little emotional good trip, and thanks for the allowing us into your world this past year.

I’m guessing “machree” is the Irish “Mo Chroí” (my heart)? [not American so I’m kind of surprised here lol]

Take heart, it seems a warming trend will follow immediately after Christmas.

Are you sure that’s not the Tsouris River? (tsouris: trouble, distress) :)
