For some people, “out of sight, out of mind,” is a real issue. Work-in-progress has to be visible or else it is sidelined or forgotten. My desk at work (and quite a few others) would have files and papers piled on top [in specific locations]. My computer desktop held multiple folders, files, and documents and my email inbox would contain months of messages pertaining to all my on-going projects. A new (and thankfully temporary) manager insisted that we all maintain neat, tidy, clear desktops and inboxes both on and off the computer. He believed that ‘a tidy desk means a tidy mind’. Everything had to be filed away every day [and he did a walk-through to check every afternoon]. Not surprisingly, people started being late for or missing meetings, getting deadlines confused, losing track of paperwork, etc. It took his supervisor just a few months to realize the problem — people need to organize their own stuff or else they can get disoriented. She reassigned the manager to a ‘top priority’ joint project where he would be working with a team from different agencies. Within a few days of his leaving, we were almost back to our normal, functioning selves.
The desktop of my Mac fills with screen snaps, photos, downloaded documents etc. REALLY FAST! I have a fabulous utility (PARALLELS TOOLBOX) that has a “Hide Desktop Files” feature, among dozens of other useful ones. The utility lives in my menu bar where it’s just a click away. It leaves me with only the beautiful Wallpaper I’ve selected for the week. I use the feature to visit the real desktop numerous times in a day – that’s where a lot of useful stuff is lingering, but then I go back to my fantasy clean desktop ;-)PS – available for Windows too (I think it has a free trial period). VERY highly recommended. Oh, the room where I’m working is a terrible mess.

He looks a little old to have a teenager’s room. Is he in his parents’ basement? (Where’s all the Star Trek stuff?)

Unfortunately, there are people whose entire house looks like this. Very sad.

Every time I organize my desktop, some stupid program poops out a new shortcut icon that I neither need nor want. Apple is a prime offender.

All that clutter is blocking his use of Windows.
