Since she just spent so much on aquarium supplies, she might as well buy the kids some healthier fish that have been kept under better conditions. Then they can learn how to clean a fish tank every week with suctioning out the gravel, scrubbing the sides, partially changing the water, changing the filters, testing the Ph of the water, and chemically treating the water to balance the Ph. Then they can decide if they ever want to commit to maintaining fish again. Fish can live for several years, but the tanks take a lot of work. Most people kill their fish within weeks with negligence to the tank conditions.
Pet stores often have huge tanks of goldfish – they’re considered “feeder” fish for other, more desirable fish to “snack” upon.
When my boys were small, they came home with carnival prizes, and since I had a spare tank, we didn’t go with the ubiquitous “goldfish” bowl, but set them up properly in a 55-gallon spare tank.
Of course, the boys lost interest almost immediately, but I managed to keep them alive until they were the size of “Pond Koi” before I managed to transfer them to a local aquatic pet store.
I managed to keep them from the “reptile” stage of pets, though it was a near thing, but we DID do the whole “gerbil-Hamster-guinea pig-white rat” stage. My wife’s “passion” was dogs – and guess who got to take care of them all?
I’m not a great fan of ANY animal, but I believe that once you’ve taken “responsibility” for the life of that animal IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! You don’t keep them around like a shirt or a pair of shoes until you’re tired of them and then pitch them!

And the whining begins.

Should have waited a couple of days before spending $55.71 on free goldfish.

Well, that didn’t take long. Usually the fish at least live long enough to make it back home.

You need to open the bag so the fish don’t suffocate.
