As a crossword puzzle constructor, I know that a black square that has black squares on two diagonally adjacent sides (so that they form a “L” shape) is called a “cheater,” and some editors don’t allow them, making for a more “open” pattern in the puzzle grid.
Black squares in the corners of a puzzle grid are also considered “cheaters”.
