So glad I wasn’t flying last weekend. I’ve dealt with delays—even worse when I was conducting tours and had to arrange rescheduling for 12-25 people. Stray luggage, overwhelmed airline personnel, crowded airports—miserable. What a frustrating mess!
Increase profits by cutting the workforce. Corporate greed at work. There is an aircrew shortage. There is also a route shortage. It is possible to fly direct from New York to Seattle, but it’s more profitable to stop in Chicago along the way.
Yes, the weather was a factor. I mean, what are the chances that Chicago will have snow in December? Like how often does that ever happen? Let’s continue to route everybody through there and schedule 60 departures between 7 AM and 8 AM. We can launch them at the rate of one a minute … if everything goes perfectly.
Now the airlines are asking the FAA for one pilot per aircraft. It won’t impact safety of flight THAT much. (One more seat that they can sell). So we have an extra crash or two. With the millions we’ll save, we can afford to replace the equipment. Think of it as an enforced modernization program.
Isn’t this the result of American Capitalism, companies maximizing profit.. at the expense of customers. And, when it goes sour.. customers demand the government do something.
Seems all comments center on SWA. As I did not read every news spike on cancellations, I wonder: was SWA the only air travel company to cancel flights? Did long distance bus or train lines cancel? How about subways and inner-city transport?
If you look at the cancellation statistics, Southwest is the only airline with cancellation troubles and its all caused because of out-of-date and inferior "mechanisms for scheduling flights – they’re probably using Commodore 20s in their computer rooms they should probably upgrade to AT LEAST Atari STs. Now we know how they keep their executives’ salaries high while keeping their ticket costs so low – oh, and they kept their Denver ground crews working so long many suffered from “frostbite”

I have no sympathy for the airlines. Every time there is some crisis they’re the first in line for funds. And then what happens? More expensive, fewer amenities (think bag of nuts as opposed to meals), charges for this and that – more than a carry-on, etc. And the extra income is not shared with those down the ladder. The rich get richer and the rest of us pay more taxes.
I would like to know what Southwest did with all the Covid bailout money; and why didn’t they spend a few dollars on upgrading such outdated software. Never mind, I know satisfying ‘shareholders’ is much more important. Get ’em Buttigieg.

Of the 18 sides, Stahler only found 8 problems. The other sides must, therefore, be GOOD outcomes.

The inherent superiority of the private over the public sector being displayed, right?

I guess southwest has a clerk who schedules ALL the flights in a basement somewhere. The clerk’s pencil wore down and here we are.

We travel in the Fall and Spring, never around holidays and rarely by air.

Just asking. Not criticizing.
