Like radishes, cauliflower, and broccoli in my case (when it came to eating them rather than planting them).

I actually visited an old relative as a very young kid, out in the country, who used a wood stove. Her father had been in the Civil Wsr!

The new hybrid vegetables often have increased size, hardiness, and resistance to diseases; but they may not have the old-fashioned good flavor of the heirlooms. Beauty is ultimately in the mouth of the holder. Is it the fading sensitivity of my taste buds, or are store-bought vegetables and meats such as poultry less savory these days?

To me heirlooms are using your own saved seeds …

It’s the roses I miss. Modern roses are bred for beauty and size but without the classic rose scent.

I always though heirlooms were objects handed down through the family. Any vegetables handed down would be really dried out and hard.

Gave up on “heirloom” veggies; poor yield, bug-ridden, diseased… There’s good reasons people have spent hundreds of years breeding better ones.

“Heirloom” has become a marketing gimmick. Same Beefsteak tomato, but now its called an heirloom…sigh.

No doubt by saving the seeds from previous years crops. Pre GMO. And you graciously exchange cuttings and seeds with your neighbors.

When I stayed with a SIL, her neighbor would bring over the most delicious cherry tomatoes to share. The dogs would even threaten to attack if they didn’t get a couple, lol. (Though they would roll them around on the floor until I bit a tiny hole into them so they could taste them, silly dogs!) Unfortunately, I never thought to get the name of the tomatoes from the neighbor.
