A friend in her 80’s once attended a bridal shower for a great-great grandniece. All of the guests were asked to bring a favorite recipe on an index card. My friend wrote:

    Thaw out

    Take out

    Eat out

We have used our oven – both in our apartment and in also in house – to store food as we have had rather small kitchens with a lack of storage space.

In our current kitchen (have had for over 30 years) our stove is two steps from our refrigerator, the sink and the 2 cabinets are a step across the aisle. We have a third cabinet between the fridge and stove. Cooking is like doing a dance one step forward, two steps left, then 2 steps right – turn, put dish in sink – cha cha cha.

I may as well store something in there. I use the microwave, the Air Fryer and the Crock pot.

Get a panic call from a neighbor on Thanksgiving. They found me at my parents’ house. They turned on the oven and forgot they store cookies in it. I didn’t ask for details and don’t get the problem but they wanted to use my oven! No. I didn’t like that idea. But luckily I had a huge countertop oven that worked for them.

I remember a news story years ago about a household that knew they were about to be busted for possession of illegal fireworks. So they hid them in the oven. It worked! The police didn’t find them. Unfortunately, they forgot that’s where they stashed them until they later turned the oven on, and burned the house down.

And the leftovers. Just reconstitute with a sauce or gravy.

We use our microwave for a breadbox! It actually gets more use storing our fresh bread and rolls than it ever does as a microwave oven.

We use our dishwasher to store dishes. We haven’t turned one on in about 30 years. I know studies have supposedly found that one wastes more energy doing dishes by hand, but it’s hard to believe. And for only two people, hand-washing is quite sufficient. After all, I hafta get my exercise somehow!

In Mexico, kitchen ovens are rarely used for baking or roasting, so most Mexican housewives use theirs to store pots and pans.

these comments have been educational… ☺

as in many japanese homes, ours doesn’t have an oven. had a magic chef many, many years ago, but gave it to a friend when we moved away from that location. recent model homes offer the option of either an oven or a dishwasher built into the kitchen. since most japanese women don’t know how to use an oven, they opt for the dishwasher (or just more shelf space)…

to answer the question, “baking” is done with a microwave, usually…
