School was 1.2 miles each way, past cabbage fields. I can still smell those. In my forties, I bicycled to work for almost 8 years. It was uphill both ways because I lived on the east side of the valley and the job was on the west side.
googled it…walked 1.6 miles to school (one way) in RI growing up from 5th grade to high school…small school only had 3 buses, so we were kicked off in 5th grade
I knew it was true with both of my parents. Dad grew up in Poland a hundred+ years ago. Only the Prussians had automobiles. Mom grew up here but my grandmother did not own a car. Aside from the trolleys there was walking.
