Paul, Sit down, Buckle’s is a Lap dog.

Paul, you’re too young to be such a grouch! You have a great dog. He did exactly what you asked him to do. Reward him!

Buckles did what you said, Paul! My dog is always with me on my chair!

He’s small, pick him up and move him. Or better yet pick him up, sit down and hold him on your lap.

Buckles has a future in law or engineering . . .

Paul doesn’t know how lucky he is. My dog came to me at age 6 having no concept of human language. Even after 6 years with me, we communicate with hand signals, body language and tone. I am not even sure she knows the name she has had for 6 years or if she goes by tone. She likes me to talk to her, but she has no clue whatsoever. I like to impress people in the hospital by reciting words like, “eat, cookie, biscuit, walk, ride, outside, pee, let’s go, time to eat…” and my dog never blinks an eye. Then they believe me that she has no concept of human language at all. It’s too late now. I keep trying, but I know I am wasting my time. Getting through an advanced therapy dog class and passing the exam (mostly obedience) took a lot of work. I was told to train her with food, and then told at the last session that we were not allowed to use food to test. I had resisted using food, since beagles are pigs and I didn’t want to either fatten her up or teach her to expect treats for doing what was expected in her therapy work. She aced the exam.
