Technically all Tequilla is mezcal as they are made from Blue Agave. However, Tequilla is an Appellation of Origin for product made from agave grown in certain states in Mexico. Also, mezcal is produced using earthenware vessels and lots of smoke. The Bombis agavis caterpillar was added to each bottle by one producer of mezcal as a marketing ploy for the American market. Serious mezcal producers would never think of adding a caterpillar to their product.
