THC has its uses, but it’s best to be cautious.

If you’re wracked with nausea enough, you’ll try anything.

When my mom in North Carolina was having chemo treatment, I offered to bring her some pot, but she was pretty conservative, and declined. While I was there caring for her, I mentioned that to some of her local friends, and the minister’s wife said that she’d also already offered, and gotten the same answer. Then a retired career army officer said the same thing, and also another grandmotherly type from down the street had offered.

In the next frame, the moral busybodies beat down the door to tell us how evil “the devil’s weed” is and how Lacey is trying to dodge the suffering that God has righteously assigned to her.

My how far we’ve come. Back in 1996 it was illegal everywhere in the USA.

Now it’s entirely legal in DC and 20 other states.

When my uncle was dying of cancer around the same time as this storyline, he was able to get prescription joints. They were made by one of the US cigarette manufacturers and looked exactly like cigarettes but were pot instead of tobacco.

In a kind of related story, I heard that Oklahoma had voted down legalizing pot fully, even though medical marijuana is legal. Apparently though, about 10% of the population has a prescription for medical marijuana. Odd.

Harry Anslinger, US Commissioner of Narcotics from 1930 to 1962, was largely responsible for marijuana being listed as a Schedule 1 drug by the federal government. Was ol’ Harry motivated by the finest science of his day? Well, let’s listen to the man himself:

“Marihuana leads to pacifism and Communist brainwashing.”

“Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”

“You smoke a joint and you’re likely to kill your brother.”

“Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”

“The primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.”

“Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.”

“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Nēgroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Nēgroes, entertainers, and any others.”
