Another mention of Joe G. Does anyone remember—Schulz put someone’s real phone number in a Sunday strip once. I think it was a baseball player’s. They started getting calls early. The person wrote a foreword to one of the books, telling the story.

Mookie Wilson had a cap.In the 1986 world series the fans in Boston’s Fenway were teasing him, chanting his name in a slow mournful way. After a minute or so he turned. Doffed his cap bowed to them and turned back to the game.

The Boston fans then cheered his style and left him alone.

If I recall, Joe Garagiola grew up on the same street as Yogi Berra and they played ball together as kids. Of course, Yogi went on to be one of the best, a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame. Joe, well, not so much.

So, whatever you may say about Charlie’s managerial style, he made sure that his players had caps. Evidently Patty doesn’t get into caps herself. OK, Patty, how about jersey’s.

Baseball caps, were first used in the mid-19th century by the Brooklyn Excelsiors baseball team. They were made of straw and had a wide brim to protect players’ eyes from the sun. The modern baseball cap with a rounded crown and a stiff bill or visor was first introduced in the 1940s by the New Era Cap Company.

Marcie has a point, Peppermint Patty. You may only be a sandlot team, but you’d look better with something you could call a uniform. Matching caps would do that for you. Right now you just look like kids in a school yard playing baseball at recess.
