Hmm… I always thought it was more about the Myth of the American Dream and Jake’s desire to achieve it by accumulating the material symbols of success. In high school I knew a guy who argued in class that “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” was the interior monologue of a guy deciding whether or not to enter a bordello.
