I read once of a family whose basement filled in a flood. They got a pump and emptied it, but the ground outside was totally saturated… so when it was emptied, the outside pressure was enough to break their basement walls.
Yup, it is always good to be a dentist with a positive attitude. Compared to my dentist who had a habit of saying, “You should be glad I only have to pull out 5 teeth! Imagine if ALL your teeth had to be pulled. Then you would have to resign yourself of only having to eat nothing but soup for the rest of your life!”
When a burst pipe flooded our downstairs bedroom our insurance paid enough to restore everything with extra money left over. But it had been quite a surprise when I got out of bed in the middle of the night to head to the bathroom, only to find I was wading in a couple of inches of cold water.
I live in a part of the country where basements are not at all common – you need a special contractor with blasting experience to have one built – and everyone knows not to build in low-lying areas because they are natural waterways for rainwater (they’re called arroyos.)
Common sense is a good teacher – you learn to listen to your prospective neighbors before building – a beautiful piece of property is not necessarily a good place to put a home – ask around, first.

However, worse problems of others don’t make yours less than what they are.

There’s nothing, and then there is having nothing. But at least John and Elly have each other.

John is right, though.
Think of all the homes and businesses totally destroyed by the recent wave of tornadoes in the midwest.

There’s a good moral lesson here. As an old saying goes, No matter how dark things get, “It’s always darkest before the dawn!”

How about something more interesting… Like a sex scandal at the dental office, or Granthony’s mother suddenly re-appears and starts wreaking havoc?

In the final panel, Elly and John are practically twins.
