While on the surface it may appear that Calvin is trying to gross Susie out in reality this is just a delaying tactic as Calvin is imagining how gross the worms would be and how to avoid having to eat them.
This is where learning those sleight of hand tricks come in handy. Of course, he could have used 5 gummy worms, but that may have cost him more than a nickel.
On one of many drunken evenings, one of my friends was about to feed six earthworms to his aquarium fish (I don’t choose this number to one-up Calvin; the story is true). I told him I’d give him a dollar for each one he ate. So he downed them all. Six bucks gone. But he knew I was really broke, so a few evenings later, when we convened with five other friends and him, he and them each pledged a dollar each if I ate six earthworms. Earned my money back! Then of course, none of my other friends wanted to be outdone…

How is her nickel at stake? She can only lose it. If she leaves she still has it.

Speaking of classic bluffs:
KIRK (into wall communicator): Kang! Kang, this is Captain Kirk.
[Engineering]
KIRK [OC]: I know you can hear me, so don’t cut me off. We have Mara, your wife. We talk truce now, or she dies! Reply!
[Long silence]
KIRK: She has five seconds to live. Reply!
[Shorter silence]
KANG (subdued voice): She is a victim of war, Captain.
[Bridge]
KANG [OC]: She understands.
KIRK (cutting the connection): He called my bluff!
