Assuming a 334 million population I get about 88 humans per square mile when I do the math. I don’t know if I would consider that nearly 100. A number of 27,000 people per square mile would be about 1 person per 1,000 square feet. But consider that many of these people in New York are stacked vertically in high rise buildings. That would give them a much larger available space to exist in than just the land surface area.

Well then, I’m glad I don’t live in NYC. Just fun to watch it in Seinfeld reruns.

I use Splenda, and it doesn’t taste to me as sweet as real sugar, which I try to avoid.

Ripley’s needs to learn the law of physics. It is impossible for 27K people to occupy the same space because no two objects (or people) can physically occupy the same amount of space.

Hurray for firefighters all over, whether or not they get paid for their services.

So why isn’t a packet of Splenda 600 times smaller than a packet of sugar?

I was a volunteer fireman in my younger days, even the asst. chief. I worked with some awesome men & women.

Last I read there are something like 8 people per square mile in Montana…..imagine….no nosy,loud,ignorant neighbors…..

27,000 people per square mile is 1,032 square feet per person. I can live in that square footage. But don’t expect me to live in a large city. I don’t understand the difference I feel.

On the subject of artificial sweeteners – I can’t believe the horribly bitter Sweet n Low (Sacharin)is still around!

Even more unbelievable than 27,000 people in a square mile (640 acres) in New York City was the population of Andersonville prison, a Confederate POW facility during the Civil War. It began at roughly 16 acres, and was enlarged to 24 acres, and at its peak held 31,695 men. But not all of the 24 acres were useable. There was a 3 acre “swamp” in the middle, and a no-man’s-land for 19 feet around the inside perimeter of the prison stockade. To set foot in that no-man’s-land resulted in getting shot. Mrs. Fogwhistle’s great-great grandfather, a Union soldier, was held prisoner there for an extended time.

I believe that Dover, DE is the only state capital whose fire department is staffed by volunteers.
