Hey this was either misworded or the word AT was supposed to rhyme with something. Maybe CAT.

Does it usually happen on a certain day of the week, perhaps … Wednesday? (“My, that leg looks exciting!”)

It is a learned behavior so the dog saw someone winking and is imitating it. So the only way to know why is to watch it and work it out from context. If you wink to your spouse as a sign of affection, like my wife used to do with me, then it is probably a sign of affection. It can also be a sign of submission if only one partner tends to wink and the other does not. If you have winked while asking for healthy food but hinting you want something more tasty, then it may mean the dog wants a snack as well.

The dog actually thinks it is speaking “human” by impersonating you. It may even be confused that you are not understanding your own cues.

“So why do dogs wink? Megan Conrad, DVM, is a veterinary consultant at Hello Ralphie, a telehealth veterinary service. She says winking is often an intentional behavior with various meanings—but there could be some health reasons behind it, too.”And, for cats…“A cat “wink” is the same as a human wink, closing one eye at a time instead of both. That said, human winks are often intentional, while cat winks are more likely an involuntary eye movement. "

If it’s code, and you don’t know what it means, how do you know that winking back is the correct response, Aunty? You could just be making the situation worse.
