Gene, explain that you just need to invite people over to watch your awesome tv with the understanding that they bring the food in exchange. With the money you save on grocery bills, the tv more than pays for itself in a couple years. In fact, it’s actually a money-maker. It would have been financially irresponsible to not buy it. Shift the blame back onto Miles. Also, keep him and Donna away from your parents and the stories about all the things you broke playing football in the house at his age.
Gene may also be grounded after this. And it’s stuff like this why i’ve always loved Donna as a parent: she may be tough at times, but she’s always fair while gene is more of the old school of FEAR AND LECTURES WILL WORK ala Calvin’s dad. He’s not a terrible father and is honestly more naunced than Calvin’s dad or most legacy comic strip parents, he’s just a man of his time (the 80’s/early 90’s) and thus dosen’t get that maybe punishing your kid while your maddest at them isn’t going to actually work or be healthy, or as seen with the nothanksgiving arc, to actually give his son positive attention more than twice.
That looks like a rear projection TV, and at that price, I’d guess Mitsubishi or maybe Sony. Call the TV repairman (ever heard of that trade, whippersnappers?) and if the mirror is intact, screen replacement will be under $500.
My wife likes new bikes, and vintage watches. I’ve never understood why she needs so many. But I know she’s careful to try and not mention how much the next one costs.
My mom in a generous moment sent wife and I shopping. She started off deciding that missus needed a better sewing machine and sent me off to fill cart with new Singer and a serger and then to get me a better ham radio. It was compact but anything that small could be better. We went to an HRO store in Virginia and first radio on the counter as we came in was $14,000 so we settled on a $3500 Icom. My Donna dropped as much or more on custom greeting card supplies. (and cigarettes)
funny enough, those types of tvs were NOT tube tvs. they were projection tvs. There’s some neat videos on Youtube of a guy that took apart the filtered layers and MELTS ROCKS with them using sunlight!
I’d still be interested to see Gene get the tv repaired.
Spending 3000 in this day and age on a TV that’s not a flatscreen is just ridiculous. Especially since I have never seen a big screen tv that can be broken by a football.

If I paid $3,000 for a TV, I’d expect the characters to jump out of the set and entertain me.
