Ok, so I’m the math nerd who is solving this for no reason. 10% off 3150 is 2835. For 5.5% sales tax: (2835)(1.055) = 2990.93. Amount left: 3000 – 2990.93 = 9.08. So Bob has enough with $9.08 to spare.

10% off of 3150 is 2835. 2835 × 105.5% = 2990.93. Bob has enough.

There isn’t actually enough information given to solve this problem. You also need to know how greedy the state/county/municipality is. The issue:

He would need $2835 + 173.25 to purchase the ring in that case, or $3008.25. Unless he can haggle with the store, or come up with alternate financing, he doesn’t get the ring (stupid taxes!)
