    Last time was a cover for a CIA op to recover a Soviet sub. With Howard Hughes leading the dance. I cannot picture any of our current crop of rich engineers being able to pull this off. Elon would let the drill head get half way to the bottom, get bored and acquire ChatGP so he could play with AI.

    I think it was a Howard Fast short story in which while drilling the deepest well ever attempted, possibly using a nuclear device, the drillers struck blood.
