Maybe there’s no future in time traveling, but if you make the jump small enough, viewing the past can be essentially the same as viewing the present. I’m sure there is a story about that somewhere. Oh yeah: The Dead Past by Isaac Asimov (1956); pretty standard government conspiracy story, until the surprise ending.
