To answer that question you need to know the metric equivalent of a life.

What, prey tell, does the metric system have to do with a cat’s nine lives?

Cats in England refuse to use anything invented in France, they stick with the old pound, shilling, pence system. It works out to about twelve and a half lives depending on the exchange rate.

It is a bit of a mish mash in the UK, to be fair. Here is an interesting article on what is used where and by who – https://yougov.co.uk/topics/society/articles-reports/2022/04/07/metric-or-imperial-what-measures-do-britons-useIn general long distances are measured in miles, but for short distances it is usually metric (but some still use feet and inches). Most things are metric though

Since lives, in this case, are measured by time, the metric system does not have a time measurement. They tried in the late 1700s but the farmers ignored it and it metric time was soon dropped.

Fewer, not less, in this instant. According to QI, English cats have 9 lives.
