    I don’t play standard golf, but in disc golf a layup is typically just trying to get in a good position for your next shot, or just tossing the disc under the basket rather than risking a long putt.

    “Laying up” in golf means not hitting the ball as far as you could, even though the hole is further away. It’s frequently done to avoid hazards (for example, a drive might risk going in the water), or just to recover from a bad shot without risk of compounding the problem.
