…‘sit in the back then the host will say…

    …Friend, come, sit closer…

    …[which never happens anymore…

    …now get off my lawn’]….

    …but this F.A. is on to something…

…I can’t eat the part of the sandwich that I touch…

There is no such thing as an irrational phobia. They are all based in some actual horror that is quite real. It is the things to which they attach in the subconscious that can be ridiculous. These cues or triggers can be anything. Some are very obvious, such as a rational fear of being crushed and suffocated, expressing itself as an irrational fear of enclosed spaces, claustrophobia. The human brain does not have the speed and power required to examine every aspect of a situation quickly. That takes time. To improve survival, it maintains a library of bad things, and uses fuzzy logic to identify any resemblance between current events and items in that library, responding with an immediate panic override.

Coming in contact with a peacock in full plumb, made me bounce out of his way on my pogo but ran into a man selling balloons and totally wiped out in the koi pond!

    I hate when that happens!

It just occurred to me. If we have nothing to fear but fear itself, is that phobophobia?

Peacocks are loud, nasty, and dirty birds that can be very aggressive to humans and other creatures. If you think roosters who can’t tell time keep you awake, try putting up with peacocks.

True Story: Once upon a time I had a peacock take up temporary residence on the recessed dormer roof of my house. I named her Anna Nicole because of her prominent chestal attribute. Where she came from and where she went nobody knows.

P.S. I did not fear Anna Nicole.

It’s funny how we quickly make fun of irrational things when we are nothing if not irrational. It’s good to laugh at yourself, I guess, but it’s funner ( I know it’s irrational, but it’s more fun to say than more fun) to laugh at others. Ha-Ha!

he sound of a pogo stick is cringe-worthy, like a drier version of the “Chinese water torture”; probably it’s worth a “—phobia” of its own. But, more generally, I’d agree that it is rather crass (and certainly non-PC, goodness knows) to make fun of anyone’s phobias. As the oldtime radio tag-line has it, " ’Tain’t funny, McGee!"
