I can see the age difference just by looking at their hands, 42.

There’s a continuum of weirdness in IT departments. Trust me, I’m a retired programmer. An important IT skill is pretending to be normal. It makes end users not want to hide from you and makes interaction run smoothly. I always tried to make users feel like we were working together regardless of how I felt about it.

Wanna know why IT people are weird?

    1) Your PC won’t power on. If the lights in the office are out and when you look out the window the transformer on the power pole on the street is sparking, there’s no need to call IT (from your cell phone).

    2) That little tray that slides out of your PC or laptop… It’s not a cup holder.

    3) How come when you’re at home shopping on Amazon.com you can recite your credit card info without looking at the card, but at work you can’t remember your login password even though you had us reset it to ‘password’ for you yesterday (AND you have it taped under your keyboard for all the world to see)?

    4) Speaking of being at home… How come you can setup and configure a complex home theater system but at work you can’t figure out how the conference phone works…even with the directions sitting right next to the phone (Oh…that’s right…you threw the directions away because it made the conference room look ‘cluttered’).

It guys might be weird, but users make them that way.

That would make sense too. But the world is still not ready for that level of Stranger things.
