When my kids were little, we read endless books. They were very familiar with the story. I took them to a drive-in theater to see Charlottes Web, and when Charlotte died, they cried. I guess seeing it on screen was more vivid and real to them, than reading it.
SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T READ OR SEEN "CHARLOTTE’S WEB!!
I think somewhere along the way, many years ago, I saw a cartoon presentation of “Charlotte’s Web” and liked the general story, but didn’t remember the details. But recently I had an opportunity to read the book, as I never had and was curious, and was very disappointed in how E.B. White portrayed Fern, the 8-year-old girl in the story, and also the ending. He has Fern completely lose interest in Wilbur and Charlotte over a crush on a boy, Henry Fussy, and riding on the Ferris wheel. Not very believable when Fern had been so involved in all the barnyard creatures, she’s 8 after all, not 18. And then for some reason, White has Charlotte choose to die alone at the fairgrounds, when she easily could have been transported back in Wilbur’s crate. Makes no sense at all. It’s as if White lost interest in the story himself and just quit on it.
When I was a kid I read my mom’s New Yorkers for the cartoons. For some reason I also read The Talk of the Town. In high school I found out that beside writing Charlotte’s Web, White wrote a good deal of TTOTT.

I wonder what Charlotte would spell out being on today’s web.

However, it’s not very EB110. Otherwise there’d be a quad-turboed Bugatti parked in that barn.

Let’s see if the spider in the cartoon spells out “SOME DOG” in its web.

It’s really all about messages on the web, isn’t it?
