I operated a varityper in college for its’ newspaper. It’s pronounced ‘vari-typer,’ by the way.
She could have “whaled on it” but never heard of “whaling out the window”. Yes, “whale” is the proper spelling for repeatedly striking something.
In 2007 I was working at Lockheed Martin’s Rocket Ranch outside Denver and one office had an Apple II on a desk. I would have loved to fire up that puppy to see if it worked.
