I remember an AFV video where a boy and his dad take the pet hamster outside and put it on a picnic table between them to let it run around and a hawk swoops down and snags it from right between them. They were stunned.
We were dive bombed quite regularly until the puppies grew from 5 to 15 pounds. The hawks still take the occasional look, but settle for the squirrels and rabbits.
This is no joke! I’ve watched huge hawks attack mourning doves, a baby skunk in my yard and rip them to pieces. ☹️ They are able to carry small dogs, etc off!
My dog is 19 pounds. We were stalked by a hawk, I put my dog in my shadow, hoping that would help; the hawk kept circling, I pulled her closer, the hawk screamed and I picked my dog up and walked her the rest of the way home. Luckily my dog stayed calm and I did my best to show no fear. The hawks are still nearby but must have found another source. I know they will fly off with smaller dogs, but 19 pounds seemed a bit over-reaching to me. I live very close to a nature preserve. Strange things come out of those woods to get water from the pond.
There have been video and other reports of birds of prey taking chihuahuas and other small vermin, but they mostly stick with rodents and smaller birds.

Items in the predatory bird’s view are larger than they appear.

I saw what I thought was a peregrine tiercel a few months ago. I guess he was on his way up north.

I’m almost ashamed. I laughed way harder and longer than I should have.

One of my all time favorite supermarket tabloid headlines is “Cher’s cat carried off by owl.” It go Cher, cat, and owl all in one sentence.
